PCAWL Rescue Stories: Sally Mae
Sally Mae has been variously called a Lhasa Apso, a Shih Tzu or
sometimes a cross of the two. Whatever she is, she is a cute, shaggy
little lady whose luck had apparently run out. She was found wandering
in the woods by a deer hunter who brought her to the Rolla Animal
Shelter. Sally's sparse coat was filthy and full of burrs. She was
friendly though a bit shy, but the main reason she had no luck getting a
home was huge, cantaloupe sized mass hanging down between her short
little legs.
The PCAWL volunteer saw the scared, cold little dog,
shivering in the frigid pre-Thanksgiving weather and decided to take her
home over the 4-day weekend so she could be warm and cozy before being
euthanized on the following Monday. The volunteer thought Sally had
breast cancer. Instead, Sally had a huge hernia that was repaired at
the same time she was spayed. Sally is about 7 years old and has been
used as a breeder for years, so it took a little while for her to
recover from her 2 surgeries and dental cleaning.
She did recover
though, and her slow walk turned into a jaunty trot as she settled
happily into life in the foster home. It was a crowded household
though, so once
Sally Mae healed, it was time to find her a forever
home. Many people called to offer her a home. She picked a wonderful
one as you can see!
