PCAWL Rescue Stories: Nina (renamed Nana)

Nina waited patiently for her people to come to the Animal Shelter and claim her. Instead, they said they didn't want her any more. No one saw the beauty of her unusual coloring, nor the intelligence in those sad eyes, so time ran out for Nina. The Animal Control officer brought her to the attention of the PCAWL volunteer taking "Pet of the Week" photos. Something about the patient resignation in her eyes caught at the volunteer's heart so she took Nina home to foster. Nina's 'last day' became instead an opportunity for a new life.

Nina was unhappy and clearly mourning for her former family. They didn't deserve the love and loyalty of that big heart, but she didn't judge them, she just moaned softly and stared down the road waiting for them to come. She lost her appetite as she grieved.

Nina hadn't been trained, but very quickly learned some basic commands. Her ads appeared and caught the eye of Vicki. When the PCAWL member walked Nina up to the door for a home visit, Nina's ears perked up at the sound of the children's voices. Vicki took Nina on a tour of the house, and Nina clearly liked the family already. The next day Nina moved to her forever home, started tending the children (she won't allow the little boy to get into the refrigerator for example) and watching over everyone as they slept. Nina's name is now Nana, most appropriately, and Nana no longer moans. Her appetite is back. Nana is happy.
