PCAWL Rescue Stories: Marissa (renamed Ruby)
Marissa is a beautiful tortoiseshell with a big fluffy tail. Someone liked the looks of this beautiful girl when she was a kitten, but didn't care enough to take good care of her. She got pregnant and thrown out of her home, lived on the streets for a few months until finally she was picked up by Animal Control. She was not much more than a kitten herself when her babies were born in the stressful environment of the Animal Shelter. She had no milk to feed the babies and no idea how to keep the newborns warm or clean. The Animal Control officers left her alone with the babies, hoping Nature would kick in, but Nautre didn't. Animal Control called on PCAWL members to help.
The infants were the first concern of PCAWL's volunteers. They were very cold and weak. Within hours one of the babies died. By the second day, a second one lost the battle, but Marissa's third baby survived all the challenges and grew. The foster mother tried repeatedly to interest Marissa in tending the kitten, but she had no interest so she was put up for adoption long before her last baby would have been ready to leave her side.
One day, Marissa's luck changed. She caught the eye of Carol and was adopted into her forever home. She fit right into the household of two humans and two other cats. She sleeps with her people, and won't allow them to ignore the alarm clock. She loves to sit on Bill's lap to watch TV--especially the car races. Her people value this jewel of a kitty, they named her Ruby. There are no kittens in Ruby's future now, and that's for the best, considering the many homeless cats and kittens. With a happy home, a warm bed, plenty of food and a comfy lap, Ruby is truly one of the lucky ones.
