Oscar, My Golden Grandson

Oscar as a puppy

My beautiful grandson, Oscar, joined the family while his dad was in the Navy in Norfolk VA.  I heard lots of stories about the funny, naughty, hair-raising, lovable exploits of the little guy, but didn’t meet him until he was about 3 years old.

Oscar loved the ocean and enjoyed watching the boats out at sea.  He also enjoyed chasing the sea gulls, much to his dad’s dismay!  Luckily they never succeeded in luring him out far enough to drown!

Oscar and his dad came to Missouri to visit us one summer.  Oscar enjoyed exploring the farm and trying to figure out what these other quadrupeds were.              Description: Oscar and Brownie.jpgDescription: OscarAtBeaverCreek5.jpgDescription: OscarAtBeaverCreek1.jpg

Not long after this visit, Oscar became a brother…Harley entered his life to be his constant companion and best friend for the rest of Oscar’s life.  In August of 2008, the small family moved to Missouri, Dad was out of the Navy and looking for work.  This was a good time in many ways, but also unfortunately the start of the downhill slide for Oscar’s health.  He won some things in the genetic lottery, beauty, immense gentleness and courage and wisdom beyond what we expect of a dog.  He lost however in having weakness in his bone structure.  This became a time of pain, stoicism and courage as his dad did all in his power to find help for Oscar.  It started with a simple bone chip and spiraled wildly out of control from there.  He ultimately had surgery on the leg, but never returned to his former good health.  His dad fought fiercely to find help, but there aren’t always solutions to things we think can be solved.  Oscar accepted his limitations, but always pushed himself to keep up with his brother and to keep doing the things he loved.

And most of all, Oscar loved his dad. Description: Geoff and Oscar June 2011.JPG

Sadly, on November 29, 2011, Oscar was found to have advanced bone cancer that had not been found in the x-rays his dad had asked for in the previous months. Pain medications weren’t working any longer, and even Oscar’s great heart was beginning to be worn down by the pain. With enormous grief, his dad chose to release Oscar from the pain that was so relentless.  Rest in Peace Oscar, my Golden grandson, we will miss you always.
